820-2327 bios battery

i have this board with very slight water damage, its 2008 model, it has an actual rechargeable battery soldered on the board, that is water damaged a bit. What is this battery doing? only real time clock or for the bios as well? can this likely damage the bios too?

It can be removed, just to keep the time when battery is removed.
