Slow file copying/ moving

Hi all. I hope this question is OK here... if not could the mod's move it to the correct forum....
OK, iMac A1224. Did have Leopard on it. Now been upgraded to El Capitan. This is the customers machine. I also have in the workshop the same A1224 with El Capitan. I thought the issue I had was limited to my iMac and TBH was not really fussed by it, but I am sure the customer will not be happy. If I attempt to copy a file from one location on the HDD to another on the same HDD it takes a year and a day ( exaggerating slightly as only had the machine for 24 hrs). However it is extremely slow. Example, I have downloaded Firefox, which came down at a fair rate of knots, and opens the .dmg quickly. When attempting to copy the file to the applications folder, it goes slower than the slow boat to China being steered by a snail. Thus far it has been 7 hours ( since last night) and it is still saying " preparing to copy "Firefox"". if I create a file in word and save it to the desktop with no words in the .doc and attempt to copy it to documents it sits and does nothing. just sits and says preparing. The install of El Capitan on my iMac was done via an internet download from the recovery console and the one on the customers iMac is from a USB unscrupulously obtained from eBay, so completely different sources, but both are offering up the same issue. Other than that both machines are performing correctly and at speed. It is just the copying of the files from point A to point B. I have tried what I have found via Google to no avail.... any pointers. Is this an El Capitan thing?
Many thanks in advance.

These are very old machines. If hard drives never been replaced they are subject to failure because of normal wear and tear. You can check the hard drives with third party tools as DriveDx or Drive Scope or other S.M.A.R.T monitoring software. Also most of these machines were born with only 1 GB RAM. El Capitan needs minimum 2GB. So be sure to check RAM amount is at least 2GB.

Hi sorry for de;ayed reply. Customer was happy to revert to Yosamite, so I did that. His machine did have 2gb in it and the issue was the same when I installed a WD Velociraptor 250GB. My machine has got a Seagate 7200 RPM 500gb in it. His machine has an original 160GB ( may have been replaced before I got it). After a lot of searching it does seem to be an el capitan issue. With no actual resolve. TheA1224 works fine from Yosamite backwards. I dont mind the issue with my A1224. going to do more reasearch and see what I find. Thanks for your assistance Sykulski.
