If you reffer to MCP79/89, be aware that you cannot expect too much from such chips, with more than 10 yo.
Measuring the resistance to ground on 3V42_G3H is a good method; use ohm scale, not diode mode.
A value lower than 30K, usually means bad MCP...

Taking as refference 820-2879 board, L6995 is the easiest point to access for test.
You can choose any other point connected to 3V42_G3H power rail.
