Nothing exciting, the guy rebooted one day and got the question mark. Had him bring it in for an OS install, since it seemed like an easy one. Been pulling it out every now and again to try something different to no avail.
Only thing kind of unusual is the OEM charger he brought with it is...
For clarity, DFU restore does not complete, or error. The target MacBook goes to an Apple logo with a full bar, then the screen goes blank forever. Apple Configurator then switches from seeing the target in DFU mode, to a locked lock icon, and the status shown changes to "booted"
I have has this one at the shop for a few months now and have tried everything i could possibly think of, and am now at the point of seeing if someone knows something i dont about this model.
Came in booting to the question mark folder. Thought, ok try internet recovery. Will not ever enter...
no luck. Battery has a charge on it for sure. Reflowed smc with no clean flux. Nothing changed. stomped away in anger left it plugged in to 60W charger. came back in the room a half hour later and it was running and booted up. shutdown, tried to turn on again, nothing. Back to no EFI chip power...
Whatever is going on must be intermittent. for no obvious reason i got 3v sus at the efi chip and the cpu got warm. fan wasn't plugged in so couldn't verify fan spin. Unplugged to plug in LCD, gone. Trying charger and battery dance with no change. Seems to be a slight barely visible...

No difference with SMC bypass
Gets green light, then orange light. Has battery voltage. Has 3v s5 and 5v s5. no s4, no power to efi chip. Feels like SMC issue to me, but would be much happier if it were something else.
Dust everywhere (cleaned) but nothing that looks like liquid damage anywhere. Fan was completely...
No offense taken, i have a great deal of respect for you and your work. All i can offer is that of thousands, i have had no reports the issue returning or worsening. Not saying that the FET replacement is not a possible fix, but i am being honest with my results with a pretty large sample size...
Yeah just recently got on here. long time lurker. Yeah its basically like undervolting instability. It actually panics (im almost certain), but there is no time to log it anywhere before the thing dies. Im quite certain there was an efi update in 2016/2017 that helped battery life by a few...
Hey Chris, saw your order come in this afternoon. Glad its working for you. I promise you it wont be the only 3662 with that issue you see come in.
Quick shill if i may: https://realmacmods.com/product/macbook-pro-nocrash-utility/
An old topic, but i see that i am referenced, so i will chime in. This issue is extremely likely an internal defect to the CPU itself. You can watch the CPU voltage drop shortly before the crash and then of course a few seconds later the whole machine shuts down. My speculation is that an...
DP_INT_HPD goes to 3.3V from about 1/2 second before fan spin, and remains at 3.3V indefinitely. Being attached to logic level shifter, this must be a binary signal. Dont have a scope here at the moment, but can grab one tomorrow. Is there any documentation of what the HPD handshake is supposed...
With internal screen disconnected, no external display. Also, SMC lid is working correctly as well. L8300 will indeed go high (5V) briefly on initial startup.
swapped U8340 from a donor board to no change. Was hoping for a HPD translation issue, no luck.
