I have a 2011 A1286 that is back for the 3rd time due to hard drive failure. Partition is unrecoverable. I have tried EasUS and Disk Drill so far. My question is, is it possible for a board or cable to be causing this recurring problem? I have replaced the drive 3 times like i said. Thanks for any help in advance.

cable failure could be easily diagnosed with SMART. check for CRC errors, this counter shows controller <--> HDD data line errors. if smart is ok, next step is to change it to SSD. it could be simply the customer's behavior - i hade one with a habit of tapping rhythms on the palmrest. 
also, for HFS+ repair I strictly recommend you Disk Warrior, this utility works literally like a charm when diskutil fails.
