A1466 13" air ssd not reconized

i have two Macbook air boards that do not recognize the ssd. what would cause this issue?

The high sierra update? Boot from USB and check in Disk Utility if SSD hardware is recognized. Board needs BIOS update for APFS so install 10.11 and then update to latests OSX.

they are not running high sierra, but i will check in disk utility and perform the bios update and post back
