(Solved) Dead SMC? MBA 820-00165 No light, no fan, no PP5V_S5.

Sorry for the lack of update. I tried to reflow the SMC chip without reballing it, and surprisingly, the unit now works! Surprising, as there was no evidence of any liquid having been near it. Thank you both Narek and 2informaticos, I appreciate you help and advice.

(Solved) Dead SMC? MBA 820-00165 No light, no fan, no PP5V_S5.

Thanks 2informaticos. Sorry, I posted the above to Narek before realising you had also posted. I just checked SMC_RESET_L, on pin 2 of R5100, and I get 3.1v. I'll try to reball the SMC. Thank you.

(Solved) Dead SMC? MBA 820-00165 No light, no fan, no PP5V_S5.

Hi Narek. Thanks for the prompt reply. S5_PWR_EN and S5_PWRGD are both 0 volts. Where was the area liquid got on? There was very little water on the board...however I cannot remember exactly where, as I cleaned the board several weeks ago, and then had to wait ages for the customer to get...

(Solved) Dead SMC? MBA 820-00165 No light, no fan, no PP5V_S5.

Hi all. I have a Macbook Air that suffered water damage. Very minimal amount, from the look of it. Cleaned. No Magsafe light, no fan. Checked voltages and missing PP5V_S5. CHGR_DCIN 20.5v PPDCIN_G3H 20.5v PPBUS_G3H 8.2v PP3V42_G3H 3.42v PPVRTC_G3H 3.42v F7140 is 8.2v each side SMC_RESET_L...

    bitlocker!?

As Gurmon says, it can't be done without the recovery key. You can retrieve your recovery key from your Microsoft account here: https://account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey Failing that, the only options are to either remember the password, or brute force/dictionary attack the password...

(SOLVED) 2018 Macbook Pro A1989 making popping/crackling sounds when CPU hot? Audio file attached.

@2informaticos Yes, you are right. I ended up replacing the fan with a known good one, and the issue seems to be resolved. It was annoying, as it necessitated removing the logic board to replace the fan. Interestingly, the failed fan seemed to spin far more freely than the good one. Thanks for...

(SOLVED) 2018 Macbook Pro A1989 making popping/crackling sounds when CPU hot? Audio file attached.

Hi all. I have3 a mid-2018 MBP A1989 (EMC3214), that makes a popping/crackling sound when the unit gets hot. I've removed the base cover and cleaned the fans - which were already spotless, and seem to spin fine with zero resistance. I thought that the microphone may have been picking up some...

820-3115-B Blown fuse, Replaced fuse and Display assembly and no backlight. Suspect U9701?

With U9701 removed, pad 3 (A3)(BKL_EN) shows, in diode mode, to not be connected to ground, and is connected to pin2-R9731 and pin2-R9715. Any other checks I should do while the chip is removed? The only pads connected to ground are the ones that are meant to be connected to ground, i.e. A1, A2...

820-3115-B Blown fuse, Replaced fuse and Display assembly and no backlight. Suspect U9701?

Thanks 2informaticos. Sorry, I'm still learning as I go. I did checks to provide more information in my question. Yes, that makes sense to have checked it with U9701 removed...hmm, yes, I should have thought of that. I'll take off U9701 and checkBKL_EN to ground in diode mode and report back...

820-3115-B Blown fuse, Replaced fuse and Display assembly and no backlight. Suspect U9701?

Hi. Macbook came in originally with no backlight. Confirmed display worked - with torch from behind could see login screen. Replaced backlight, which blew again. Tried with known good display assembly after replacing fuse - unit worked. Returned to customer. Now, customer returned it with the...

820-00840-A Not turning on. Different voltages depending on which USBC port is used.

Thanks 2informaticos. I appreciate the welcome, and the advice. I'm trying to locate the source of the 3V3_S5 short.- hoping its one of the caps on the line. I just got a variable bench power supply. Whats the max safe volt to inject on that line?

820-00840-A Not turning on. Different voltages depending on which USBC port is used.

Hi All. First post.... I've got a Macbook Pro in for repair that is not turning on, with no fans or other signs of life. No signs of any water damage, or of any physical damage. I've tried it with a known good USBC charger. PP3V3_S5 appears shorted, with resistance to ground being 0.5...
