8-year-old board + drop + likely torn/snapped traces in board = junk pile. If board was working fine prior to drop, and then stopped after the drop, it's very, very likely damage inside board or underneath CPU/PCH/RAM/etc. You can try a new BIOS...but probably not going to help anything. Check...
Replace those power supplies ASAP and maybe the board will be saved. I bet that CPU is damaged, though. See if the unit crashes coming out of (or during) deep sleep and/or under stress. Liquid to that area is not good news.
Let's take a step back here for just a second. Your original post is confusing in several ways; first, your thread title is "SSD Recall 2016 13" MacBook Pro...". The SSD recall was for non-touchbar models (A1708). You then go on to ask a random, unrelated question about fixing the 2017 13" MBP...
I've seen several 820-00840 and 820-00875 boards the past ~3 months that all had the exact same symptoms; they power on (trackpad clicks), ppbus is stable at 13v, but there's no other progress/booting. All boards are perfectly clean with no history of drop/liquid/etc. They all came in with...
I have a customer unit (2015 12" Retina) here that has a dead/dying CPU; the video scrambles immediately in the tell-tale signs of a dead CPU (hundreds of colored, flickering checkerboard anomalies, etc), and it never reaches the desktop. The customer wanted to know if data recovery was...
Hey Duke, unfortunately I sold them off due to no (apparent) interest here. :(
I should be getting more, and will send you an email as soon as I do. We get them pretty regularly, so I'll have more in due time.
Glad to see you back, by the way!
I have ordered FDMF6808N probably 10 times, in quantities of 5 to 100 pieces. Of the 10 orders, ~7 times they were not new; the only times they were new were with the 3 smallest orders (5, 10 and 10 pieces). Such a pain returning them to China. Best bet is to place 3-5 orders from 3-5 sellers...
We repair most board models with the exception of all 820-2849/820-2915/820-2914 boards. Not worth the headache or hassle for us. We've acquired a pile of 820-2915 boards that we have no interest in repairing or profiting from. Typically we throw them up on eBay and they sell very quickly, but...
CPU power supply circuit getting hot + liquid through back vents and to KBD BL conn. (right by S5_HS) + high-fans/no chime = dead CPU. You can confirm by checking all the usuals, but this one's going to be dead.
Got this one resolved; U8310 had a BGA pad (pin 2) loose/detached on it. It measured fine and reflowed fine, but once replaced board is giving backlight properly/immediately. Pad came right off when removed it. Thanks!
Repaired an 820-3330 that now has an usual issue; it freezes during the "QTKit" iSight Camera test. Freezes every single time on this exact test; tried several test assemblies, and confirmed the issue is 100% board-related (i.e. other boards in the same test assemblies do not freeze, etc). Tried...
Of course, I "even" tried a PRAM reset ("????"--condescension noted). I tried an entirely new BIOS, which I'd hope would lead you to assume something as trivial as a PRAM reset did not resolve the issue. If it helps, I also tried turning the unit on and off again.
Working on an 820-4924 board that has a backlight issue; it's minor, and one I normally would not worry about, but the customer sent it in so I'm going to try:
1. 820-4924 with backlight issue: Backlight does not turn on until board reaches OSX login screen. Behavior is 100% consistent, every...
Unfortunately I don't have a RAM slot tester, but have ordered one today as I've needed one several times before.
However, I decided to reflow the CPU and the RAM slot is now working properly. We'll see how long it lasts, but I believe there must have either been crap under the CPU, or maybe...
Working on a liquid-damaged 820-3330 board, but that worked OK for a bit then began having issues. The board works perfectly except the top RAM slot (J2900) is not working at all--board beeps if RAM is installed in top slot at all. Works fine with only bottom slot occupied. Of course, I would...
These A1708's are sooooo fragile compared to other models...wouldn't be surprised if the SSDs followed that pattern. I think Apple wanted to ensure these things die very easily from liquid-damage. Not protecting the CPU power supplies in particular was a great decision by Apple. /s
Thanks! Yes, it's confusing; it fails external video tests in ASD, but the artifacting shows on the internal LCD under stress. I'll reflow and confirm--thank you! Sorry for any confusion, but yes it's certainly confusing. I was hoping to find damage around the GMUX, but no luck.
