820-2330 no green light

Hello,

new member from Greece and an absolute beginner.

Thank you Louis, Duke, and the rest of the board for making this forum available to the world.

I bought a complete Macbook Pro 15 late 2008 cheap on ebay with one USB not working. Measured around, replaced Q4690, nothing. C4616 was shorted to ground. Replaced that, still no USB.

Next day I plugged in the charger and got no green light! I thought it would be something easy. I also have a donor board with onewire working. Great help! I measured R6917 pin1 16.82V pin2 0V, healthy board shows pin2 7.42V. R6917 and R6918 measure 140K, schematic says 270K. What the heck?

What is pin 4 of U6915? If it is high I suspect a dead U6915. This happened because of plugging in the magsafe on a bare connector and not aligning it, so onewire shorts to 18V bus.
You cannot expect a resistor that is in circuit to measure the correct value. It could be lower because of other stuff in parallel with it. If it measured higher then there could be a problem.

Duke, an early bird, aren't you?

U6915 pin4 is 7.32V, on healthy it is 0V. Also, pin3 is 0V, on healthy it is 3.29V

Replaced U6915, got exactly the same values on all pins. Could the donor be bad, should I try with another donor chip from 820-2327 or could it be something else?

Hmm, it could be dead Q6915 pulling up pin 4 of U6915. Remove Q6915 and measure pin 4 again.

Edit:
Actually that is not possible if pin 2 of R6917 is 0V. Measure voltages on all pins of U6915.

You are using a known good magsafe board I hope?

Took another U6915 from a board with green light but bad GPU and I have a green light ! ! !

Should I proceed in this post to solve the original problem of the board that was 1 bad USB, or should I open a new post?

Also, should I ultrasonic the board again to get rid of the flux in that area or should I use alcohol and a soft brush? Does ultrasonic cleaning multiple times wear the board out?

Thank you, thank you, thank you Duke!

Does the port have 5V on it? Plug in HDD and see if it spins up. If that is ok then measure on diode mode both data lines.

I am using a genuine magsafe 85W. I replaced L4610, measured for short to ground on all for pins, they're all OK. Plugging in a mouse does nothing, but when I unplug it red light flashes for a second and I confirmed with a multimeter, I get 5V. Something wrong with the MCP I guess... Will I harm the board if I ultrasonic it a second time?

Measure on diode mode on the data pins, what do you get? If they are both the same it should be ok. Remove D4610 and see if it works, could be bad.

I assume only 1 USB is not working or are both dead?

Replaced D4610 and BAM, I have my USB working now. The other USB was fine. Should I re-ultrasonic or will I harm the board?

Thank you for your help, Duke!

820-2330 has not enough space as the 820-2610 has to replace C7771 with a proper large one. Does Luis have a video on this model?
