a1708 820-00840 doesn't detect SSD with replacement battery

So last week I got in an A1708 with 820-00840 board just for a straight battery swap, took the old battery out as usual no issues, connected new battery up powered on and I get the flashing folder with ? symbol. Replugged the SSD - same behaviour - unplugged battery and tried without battery - boots up normal SSD is detected.

Plugged the old battery back in and works normally, i've then ordered another battery from a different supplier which I received today popped that one in and again we have the flashing folder with a ? symbol.

Has Apple now done something to disable battery swaps is what i'm now wondering? Or I just happen to have two faulty batteries from different suppliers?

Does this happen w/ and w/o charger connected?
I think someone reported such issue with battery alone; when charge level goes low.

Yes behaviour is the same with and without the charger connected. Battery as fitted has around 75% charge so is nowhere near a low level!

I found a workaround where if I start the machine up with the charger only connected and then connect the battery up it continues to work and behave normally.
