I don't know if this is something we can talk about in the forum, but I was just curious if anyone has a good way to obtain ASD tests? I'm going to be switching jobs to a place where I will be working exclusively with soldering on logic boards, and they don't have access to ASD. At my old job, a consultant provided the ASD tests because he was Apple Certified. I just wondered if there was a way to get access to them.

Before you start the 5000 dollar course..... check the rest of the terms!.
if it is stil the same shit i got told last time.
your store needs to have s hit load of oblications. you have to the the course and if al terms are correct only then you wil get the certificate and then you get acces....

Hmmm ok I’m guessing part of the requirements would have to do with parts and stuff like that. I will have to look into that because that was ultimately my fear when my old boss first mentioned it to me because I remember hearing from someone about not being able to repair boards if you got a certification. If I was told that, I’d tell em to fuck off lmao

John: There is difference between getting “certified” and getting “authorized”. Certification does not give you access to AST it only gives you an easier way to work for an authorized service provider (AASP). It is the AASP that is getting access to GSX and AST and you as the certified individual hereby getting access while working for them.
Repairable: The certification itself does not cost that much. It is the learning courses that are expensive. You can take the certification tests for about 100 USD I think. If you pass you will get the certificate. I am certified but I never took a single course. I just read the public available service manuals.

Ok so AASP is the one to stay away from because then you have to be a Genius Bar douchebag and replace boards correct? Just being certified tho will not give me access to AST tho ok that makes a lot more sense. The shop that I will be working at soon is exclusively board repair, so they will never ever have intentions of being AASP lol, but I was mainly curious just to test machines after repair because obviously it helps to see if sensors fail.

Yes that’s correct. You can always just download the ASD torrents that are floating around on www and use these for models up to 2014. Later models need AST2 so with these models you must settle with the (shitty) build-in diagnostics or use third party “sensor-apps” like HWSensors or iStat Menus or something like that.

I was a AASP for 10 years up until last week.......They are going to be pretty much closing all the small independant centres down in favour of their own stores and building a central repair facilty somewhere. This is the future.
The only advantage remained was access to AST2 and genuine parts available the next day.

What does this mean for your business?
I've seen this happen when the Apple store rolled into town, the local AASP was no more, but do you know if this is a global thing or just certain stores? I am aware you deal with a large number of Apple products so it's not as if you're non productive, should other AASPs be worried?

Lots of AASP's will be fucked, as they totally rely on Apple referrals. There is no money left in being a part swapper. You got to repair to component level to make decent money. For this fact, the Apple store cant touch our prices, they are hundreds of £££ more expensive.
I'm adopting Dukes model, and largely repairing for other repair centres and AASPs. MUCH less headache.
