Blown Laptop Testing With Multimeter

I attached my apple logicboard to an alligator clip and a metal piece, I sent the black ground test lead of my muliteter to the metal sheet and once I placed my red multimeter lead to an inductor and ceramic capacitor the laptop motherboard zapped and has no power. How do you guys test the motherboard?

Depends on what the meter was set to, V, A, diode. Also I do not understand what the metal piece is used for.
