[SOLVED]820-00165-A Liquid Damage, No Power

Hey Guys,


This air had a sticky Liquid spill towards the top of the board around the SPI Chip customer said they had another store look at it already. Had Corroded Test Point that broke the trace on SPI_CS0_L. Repaired that and cleaned up any other signs of corrosion. R6116 was missing. Replaced that. There was some corrosion under U6100, U6101 and U1900. I can't see any other signs of damage. SMC Reset L is normal at 3.4V. Light on charger goes green to orange when shorting smc reset to ground. so I assume SMC is functioning normally. No signs liquid hit it either.

As expected, Missing PM SLP S4 L, I've only had a couple of these rabbit holes and have called it quits on all of them. Im determined this time... No Scope so can't check if the 3.3V has any frequency to it.

All G3Hot Rails are all present and at normal values.

I plugged in the battery and everything works fine. god damnit I've been working on this for hours. Why would it not power on without a battery???

Odd....Is charger recognised in OSX ? Does it charge battery ?

Have you run internal diagnostics ?

Yeah, charges and is working fine. im guessing this happens on the new airs because Pm Batt L has to be high/present for the machines to start now?

I knew it!! There has to be something to this literally the last 6 00165s I’ve had have ALL been missing S4 until you plug in a battery and all is good. Weird af

Using a MagSafe 1 with an adapter?

I found some of the newer boards will only power on with a genuine MagSafe2, otherwise they require the battery to get S4.

Nope even with my OEM Mag 2 it's doing it which is amazing

Yeah this is fixed. But I think we should bring up the topic of what the hell is going on with the 00165 boards. To confirm I tried both on my Bench power supply connected to a cut off genuine magsafe 2 head. and on my own personal 85W Original magsafe 2 charger. Would only start up with the battery connected. After repairing the damage around the SPI Rom and Traces it works fine. Ive Made a big red note on the first page of my schematics but I doubt im gonna forget this. wasted close to 3 hours of my time checking everything I could...

Seen this issue more than once on the forum but never experienced it myself.
