I have a small stack of SSD's that aren't being recognized. Tested in multiple computers. I'm having a hard time believing all of these SSD's are just dead. Is anyone else seeing anything like this?
No, they don't show up at all. They're all pulled from liquid-damaged computers, but they're all clean inside the metal shielding. I'm not sure if these are somehow more delicate than older drives. It's hard to understand why they're all bad.
These A1708's are sooooo fragile compared to other models...wouldn't be surprised if the SSDs followed that pattern. I think Apple wanted to ensure these things die very easily from liquid-damage. Not protecting the CPU power supplies in particular was a great decision by Apple. /s
Ok, thanks for the input. It sounds like it might just be a reality with these. And yes, maybe they were exposed to an overvoltage situation. It's definitely possible.
It's odd too because we sold a good one to someone who claimed it killed their logic board. I found this extremely difficult to believe, but he claimed it happened twice. After receiving it back, I plugged it into a good board and it worked fine and has worked fine ever since. Who knows. Either way, I don't work on these so I'll just sell them as-is and get rid of them.
2016/17 SSD's arnt always compatible in these. To test youd need both the 820-00840 and the 820-00875 boards. Im not sure if there is different BOMs on those boards for different SSD's.
Thanks, yes, I've wondered about that. I was most recently testing them in a fully functional 2016 model (820-00875). The SSD's may all may be 2017 models but I'm not sure which part numbers are which. These are 656-0074B and 656-0070A.

I can tell you i have modified a 2016 board to work with a 2017 SSD in the past. But i had a pile of dead 2017 boards to inspect for differences near the SSD connector. It was a while ago so i cannot remember the parts i changed.
