I plugged in the battery and screen and the 85w charger with adapter and the fan is now spinning. Waiting a minute or two before switching off as the CPU/ Heatsink was very hot to the touch. Didn't wait for apple folder as was worried about the heat from CPU. Do they normally get really hot to the touch. Shall I do it again but this time plug in the SSD?

I'm getting the Apple Logo and it's booting from my test USB in High Sierra. There was corrosion on pin 1 of the LCD cable. So just need to fit the board in fully with keyboard etc or shall I wait for the customers adapter first to see if the board will work without battery? I need to test if it will power up with just battery and keyboard and I'll report backThnx again

Yes, they will get pretty hot, but it is something to monitor to make sure the temp goes back down. You do have a heatsink on it correct? If so, boot the Mac, and see if all works (keyboard, booting etc). Also, run HWMonitor to monitor if the CPU cools down should run normal around 50-60 celsius on this model. Appears you will def need a magsafe 2 85 watt for the future.

OK so the MagSafe 2 charger arrived earlier today but I'm still getting the same problem. If I plug the battery in and the MagSafe the MacBook loads fine. Well I say fine - sometimes you hear the chime and get display and other times you only hear the chime and get NO display (I don't mean no back light I mean no display).

Where shall I go from here?

Thank you

So you always get backlight, just image missing sometime?
Do you get black or white screen that time?
External video OK?
Did you try other LCD screen?
Clean LCD connector and cable terminal.

How can I check to see if I always have backlight? It's black screen - no video no backlight as shining a torch shows nothing. Have checked the LCD connector and the plastic that separates pin1 (PPVCOUT_S0_LCDBKLT) from the back of that cable seems damaged. I'm attaching a picture of the end of the LVDS cable. I don't have another screen for this model. External monitor does not work either when the internal does not work. When the internal work so did the external.

"I don't mean no back light I mean no display"
Like telling has backlight, missing image only...

Pufff, your LVDS cable is f***d; it must be changed.
Pin 1 is exactly backlight line, PPVOUT_S0_LCDBKLT.
I bet you get short to ground when move it; that is the time when backlight is gone.
BTW, do not power the board when check there in diode mode...

mmmm I see. I'll have a quick look on youtube regarding changing the LVDS cable. I hope it's not a nightmare to do! On a separate question - Why would the machine only power on when both magsafe and battery are attached?

Another question if I may? If the logic board is working fine and I plug in an external display but disconnect the LVDS cable should I get a picture on the external monitor? Thnx M

Disconnect LCD, connect external monitor and give it time to enter into OSX.
Maybe will not send external video before loading OSX...

OK so here is the current situation.
Screen is working it was just a bad cable.

Here is what is happening so far....

If the battery is plugged in and I plugin the charger, MacBook Powers up. If the battery is not plugged in and I plug in the charger it will NOT powerup.(even when pressing the power key)

However, It will power up without the battery if I startup by passing the SMC.

Any suggestions please?

Thanks again for all your help so far.

This still sounds like a non genuine charger...this is exactly what happened to me when I started doing figuring it out. Does it charge and run off of the battery?

It?s a genuine charger. It shows the charging icon but doesn?t appear to charge - but keeps the battery at 68%. Kept it plugged in and the battery level didn?t increase nor decrease
