MacBook Air 13 M1 16GB Ram 512GB SSD Recovery Problem

A MacBook Air A2337 (M1, 2020) with 512 GB SSD and 16 GB RAM that developed stability issues. The Mac crashed intermittently and files were sometimes corrupted. For example, camera photos copied onto the MacBookbecame damaged after transfer.

After erasing the internal SSD, I attempted to reinstall macOS, but the installation/restore fails.

It fails at the system-image restore step when Apple’s ASR process writes an APFS image and then detects a hash/checksum (digest) mismatch.

It reaches the end of the ASR restore:

  • ASR RESTORE PROGRESS: 100%
  • then it completes transfer + decode + write + verify:
    • Transfer: Received 10066329600 bytes ... (bus speed 480 Mbps)
    • Transfer: Decoded 10066329600 bytes to 12780044288 bytes
    • Transfer: Wrote 12780044288 bytes ... to disk
    • Transfer: Verified 12780044288 bytes ... from disk
Immediately after that, the actual failure happens:

  • Transfer: Digest mismatch for /mnt1/apfs_invert_asr_img! (108)
  • Transfer: Unlinking output file /mnt1/apfs_invert_asr_img due to error 108
  • restore_apfs_image_async : failed to restore an APFS image, error = 1113
  • Later: CHECKPOINT FAILURE:(FAILURE:1113) ... failed to restore APFS image

I measured the standard logic-board power rails, and all voltages are within spec.

The Mac enters DFU mode normally, and I can start a DFU revive/restore or try to reinstall the software, but it still does not complete successfully. I suspect the on-board NAND (SSD) may be faulty, and I would appreciate advice on further diagnosis and next steps.

Hello, thank you. :)

The device currently has no active firmware. It only gets as far as the Apple restore screen with the exclamation mark. DFU mode still works, but as I said, I can't install a system.

No, I get the startup sound, and when I want to boot the startup options, it tries briefly and then I end up here.
