820-001598 SSD Upgrade

Hi

I am going to upgrade the SSD to 512GB

It came 4 NAND IC

U8600
U8700
U8800
U8900

Since there is no BRD file for this board I am not sure the location of the IC

Watching the video below I found 86 and 87. Can you give tell me which one goes besides 86 and 87 they are on different sides of the board!

After replacing the NAND IC I need to do DFU restore and reinstall the system right? Or do I need any other procedure after it?

Thank you very much!

Changed all the NAND. I think I did a good job soldering it..

However now machine does not start

Tried to go put into DFU

Not a single behavior from the machine

Went to remove all the NAND and solder back only U8600 and U8700 on the board... still no behavior at all

It doesn't turn on anymore
No DFU

To be honest I was really careful soldering the NANDS

Could I have touched a cap with that battery flex cable and shorted it? that's the only thing I am thinking about

OR

Without the NAND properly soldered the machine will not have any beavhior?

Using amp meter it gets 20.15V with MagSafe connected and cable to another working macbook it goes to 5.20v without battery and 4.10V with battery connected

I am kind of LOST now!

Probably the heat applied on the board affected something else.
Or you have some knocked off component.

Check at least AWAKE, SLPS2R, SSD and G3S volatges if present.

I used 410C/65 on a Quick 861DW which I am used to solder all the other components also

Actually I knocked CD545 when lifting the NAND and the ground pad broke. I am trying to turn on the machine without it and I do think only without this guy it should turn on... Shouldn't it?

I am trying to turn it on with a few flex cables connected... Is there any relevant to make the machine turn on (I am using screen, touchbar, keyboard, trackpad, fan)

AWAKE
PP1V2_AWAKE = 1.2V
PP1V8_AWAKE = 1.8V
PP3V3_AWAKE = 3.3V

SLPS2R
PP0V8_SLPS2R = 0.8V
PP1V1_SLPS2R = 1.1V
PP1V8_SLPS2R = 1.8V

SSD
PP2V5_NAND_SSD0 = 2.5V

G3S
P1V8G3S_EN = 1.8V
P3V3G3S_EN = 1.8V (IS IT WRONG? I MEASURE ON R8200)
PP1V8_G3S = 1.8V

This machine is auto power on if I plug on the magsafe without the battery connected?

Board should automatically turn on when charger is plugged in.
Test it alone on the desk, only charger connected.
Do you get voltage on big coils?

If you had working machine, which stopped working after you've worked on the MLB, you did something wrong; don't you think?
You must assume the risk, when try such kind of upgrade.
Recommend to the clients to sell and buy the machine they need, instead of upgrading onboard SSD/RAM.

Yes all the measurement above I did with the board alone and charger connected

BIG COILS

L7030 is kind of crazy it goes to 8.75 and then 11v and things like
L7670 have 5V in one pin

As I said I did really careful the NAND soldering. I think when managing to put back that small battery flat MAYBE i touched components on the back side of the board when putting the board on its place.

Do you think touching something with that flat cable could damage something or could it be impossible?

Yes if the machine should turn on even I didnt soldered well the NAND of course I did something but I talking to heat I did it enough to solder to the board and actually MACBOOK boards are heat resistant way better than iPhone boards for example

I always assume the risk in cases like that.

Looking to solve it!

Just for you to get a better idea

I think when I putting the board on its place I touched around that region with the battery flex!

(also attached image of the region which I think I touched)

But the point is

Is the contact (touching) with the battery flex on that side of the board make a short? or the defect or is it impossible?

That flex has no voltage on it from battery side.
Battery is not enabled until the flex is inserted into MLB.
The problem is somewhere else.

MLB has all voltages to enter DFU.
Try to force it with SE032.
You can also try flashing U4770.

Solder wire on SE032 and connect charger.
After few seconds, when/if appears in AC2 (DFU, or Recovery mode) cutt of the wire.

I am used to make the DFU restore using another machine, since you told to plug on the charger what do you mean to AC2?

I gave this measurements on a reply above, isn't it weird? Shouldn't it be a stable voltage?

L7030 is kind of crazy it goes to 8.75 and then 11v and things like

And the last question for the moment is without any NAND the normal behavior is to auto turn on when the charger is plugged appear the apple logo and then question mark folder or anything else?

T2 has a dedicated partition into SSD.
How can it start, without NANDs?

I told people on the forum many times, STOP checking L7030 voltage on new boards; is irrelevant measurment.

Without HD in a Macbook A1278 you have apple logo / chime and then question mark folder
WHY on this model is that different?

Can you confirm for me if any behavior happen without NANDS?
Without them it will be easier to check what could I have done to make the machine NOT turn on at all right?

I didnt know about L7030 on new boards. First time working with a model like this one.

By the way I removed two of the four IC (which I think I didn't solder properly)

and only resolder two of them.

Even tought I bought 512GB total (4 NANDS) soldering two of them is it possible to have any behavior? Like apple logo?? Chime?? Question mark folder??

Please give me as more detail as you can!

"T2 has a dedicated partition into SSD."
What's not clear here?
How do you want T2 to work without its partition???

Check a T2 power on sequence and see at which point SSD starts working; 01598 and 01055 available.

What is no clear. If the machine turn on and shows question mark folder without NAND soldered like the behavior of an A1278 without the HDD/SSD itself.
