I have a client who needs new ram on his iMac cause was unknown... He said he tried new memory but he was using the wrong kind. We charge $129 flat rate for macs software repairs or easy stuff replacements like cds or hds plus parts. He's the kind of customer that when i tell him how much and what it is he is going to tell me ok thank you for the diag and do it him self. This happens fairly off-tend i'd like to put an end to these shennanigans once and for all. I have always been morally correct but im tired of assholes using us for our brain.

I don't do free diagnosis, I do free estimate. I also refer people elsewhere ofr all sorts of stuff.

For example, someone said they knew the power button was the fault and wanted me to replace just the button. I knew this would be a nightmare. If you ask me to fix something I will fix it, if you tell me how to fix it and run for the cheapest thing to ask I do not work with you. I told him we do not stock power buttons, but there is a place around the corner that specializes in power button replacement. Now you're not the asshole, rather you're a genuinely helpful person who just doesn't have what they need. Big difference.

If he said he used the wrong kind of memory, I would tell him to use the crucial.com app to figure out the exact memory he needs, because if he wants me to replace the RAM it'll be $100-$200 depending on the amount he wants and this is something he can do himself. Again, the key here is to focus on the fact that a lot of people do not want their stuff repaired. THey simply want fuel for the 1 star review they're going to write. "OMG, HE WANTED $100, I BOUGHT $20 PART ON AMAZON AND DID IT MYSELF. RIPOFF!!111". You can take that away from them by beating them to it! This is why I will say "have you tried the crucial app? You'll save money over having us do it and it will even tell you what RAM to buy!" At this point, they can't rage, even if they were prepared to rage. They'll take you up on it and thank you - there's nothing to be mad at.

If he says he wants to know what it is before paying I can tell him we offer a free estimate. If it is the memory it would be $125, if it is the board it would be $325. I understand you might be ok with paying if it is $125 but not ok with paying if it is $325, but if the $125 doesn't work at all, then there is no point with proceeding as this is the lowest it could possibly cost.

We do not offer a free diagnosis as a service where you get a handwritten piece of paper saying what is wrong. We offer a free estimate towards a repair. I like the word estimate because I don't have to be RIGHT, it is just an estimate. If I sense that you do not want to spend a dime, I'll do the estimate right at the counter, and if they say no, then oh well.. go.

If you aren't ok spending the lowest possible price this could cost fixing it, then there isn't much I can do for them. I don't act like an ass over it, I just explain it as such. It can be either option A at $125, option B at $325, or option C which is you're F'd and need a new machine. If option A which is the cheapest is not something you'd be comfortable spending, I understand, but it wouldn't make sense for me to take this in.

You are in control of this.
