We charge $325 for board repair, $425 on retinas, plus 8.875% sales tax. No way in hell do invoices say what in particular I replaced. What does it even matter? Charge for repair service, tax the repair service, be done with it.

To quote the old saying, you dont pay your mechanic $200 to turn a screw, you pay him $200 for knowing which screw to turn.

U coupd inventory the item as a consumable, which is biz slang for item you use a part of doing business, but not able to charge for. Such as, you could invoice for glue so that your inventory is reduced but not charged. ie. Zero billing to customer.

However, if you do this too much... Then tax man might look at u funny. Whats too much... Its all in the eyes of the beholder.

You can also call or email you local tax office. Tell them you would like to understand the guidelines for consumable that you use in the course of a repair. However, once u open that door... Their interpretation becomes the rule unless you disagree enough to hire a lawyer.

Taxes suck. especially for small biz. It feels like it takes an army.

Found out some states have specific tax code that makes the entire job 100% taxable if any part is used in the coarse of repair. Regardless of the parts weight on overall price, the taxable amount is 100% of the service price. Florida is such a state and even requires such tax code if part is furnished by customer.

I assume the notion is that if your service includes a part, then the service itself becomes a product. The caveat is that it only applies certain defined business types. Telecommunications is one of those, but only if installed/repaired at the customers home. So it looks like our field would be exempt in florida as long as you dont do house calls.

As i said before, taxes are PIA and every state and local municipality is going to be different.
